Take a trip back to the early days of cordless tools as I revisit my very first cordless drill—the 1985 Makita 60995D. In this video, I share the story behind this heavy, 9.6V workhorse and why it was considered revolutionary at the time, especially for professional locksmiths.
I bought this drill in 1985 for just under $300, and it quickly became a daily tool in my locksmith business. Back then, automotive jobs—especially older GM dash-mounted ignitions—often required precise drilling to access and remove the lock. Before cordless drills, this work was painfully slow using hand drills. This Makita completely changed how we worked in the field.
I also talk about the drill’s torque, durability, battery limitations, and why these vintage cordless tools are now becoming collectible, with surprising resale prices today. If you’re interested in locksmith history, vintage tools, classic Makita gear, or seeing how trade tools have evolved over the decades, this is a fun and informative look back.
