It’s important never to use normal FG boots if you’re playing on an artificial grass pitch – also known in short as AG or turf pitches. There are two reasons; one is durability. FG boots simply aren’t built to withstand the extra abrasion that AG pitches will cause on the sole plates. That is due to the heat added by the extra friction from running on a synthetic surface instead of a natural one, which is extremely rough on the boots. Also, an AG pitch is made with a more sticky material – it’s synthetic grass straws with a rubber filling, and that filling is usually a lot more sticky than natural dirt. That means that if your foot is planted and sticks too much in the ground, it will stay put even when your body keeps moving – and that can lead to some seriously nasty injuries. Also, running on AG with normal FG studs will cause you not to penetrate the pitch properly, meaning that you’re only running on the tip of your studs. That’s a lot more unstable than is good for your body, so here, shorter and more studs is the right way to go.
