Because of the guilt I felt for the pain and suffering I caused the woman I loved, I didn’t dare return to face her, choosing instead to go deep into the forest to punish myself. After a long, exhausting day of walking, hastily eating a piece of bread to stave off hunger and sleeping in the bushes bitten by mosquitoes, I was lucky enough to find a dilapidated, abandoned house in the middle of a jungle rainstorm.
Seeing this place as a chance for redemption granted by the higher powers, I used my meager remaining money to buy two knives, instant noodles, and shrimp paste, and began my survival. I diligently cleared weeds, used an old hoe to till the soil, swept the floor, and scrubbed the pile of old dishes to find shelter from the sun and rain
Taking advantage of the cool weather, I trudged back to carry wooden stakes to build a trellis for beans in front of the house. Using a shovel, I dug holes in the ground, firmly planted the stakes, and then placed the horizontal poles to make a trellis. Gathering the leftover stakes in a corner and storing some herbs, my stomach rumbling with hunger, I went into the kitchen to cook a simple dinner for myself and my little dog.
The journey to rehabilitation ahead is long and arduous. I pray that the sweat of today will give me the right to one day return and ask for forgiveness…
